Statistical utilitarianism

چکیده
We show that, in a sufficiently large population satisfying certain statistical regularities, it is often possible to accurately estimate the utilitarian social welfare function, even if we only have very noisy data about individual utility functions and interpersonal utility comparisons. In particular, we show that it is often possible to identify an optimal or close-to-optimal utilitarian social choice using voting rules such as the Borda rule, approval voting, relative utilitarianism, or any Condorcetconsistent rule.

Critical Analysis of Moral Utilitarianism in the View of John Stuart Mill From the Perspective of Allameh Ja’fari
Moral utilitarianism is one of the issues underlying utilitarianism among Western thinkers. At the forefront of this debate is John Stuart Mill, who found out the utilitarianism of morality after designing the classical liberalism in the realm of morality based on the philosophical basis of utilitarianism. To him, utilitarianism in life brings about most happiness for a person. The goal and pur...
متن کاملProbability adjusted rank-discounted utilitarianism∗
We propose and axiomatize probability adjusted rank-discounted critical-level generalized utilitarianism (PARDCLU). We thus generalize rank-discounted utilitarianism (RDU) to variable population and uncertainty and thereby take important steps towards preparing RDU for practical use, e.g. for evaluation of climate policies and other policy issues with long-run consequences. We illustrate how PA...
متن کاملMeasuring the Consequences of Rules
Recently two distinct forms of rule-utilitarianism have been introduced that differ on how to measure the consequences of rules. Brad Hooker advocates fixed-rate ruleutilitarianism (which measures the expected value of the rule’s consequences at a 90 percent acceptance rate), while Michael Ridge advocates variable-rate rule-utilitarianism (which measures the average expected value of the rule’s...
متن کاملRawls versus Utilitarianism in the Light of Political Liberalism
The critique of utilitarianism forms a crucial subplot in the complex analysis of social justice that John Rawls develops in his first book, A Theory of Justice. 1 The weaknesses of utilitarianism indicate the need for an alternative theory, and at many stages of the argument the test for the adequacy of the new theory that Rawls elaborates is whether it can be demonstrated to be superior to th...
متن کاملRobust Institutions
I propose to show how to translate the economic analysis of institutions developed in the tradition of “worst case” political economy into the lingua franca of robust statistics. An institution will be defined as contingent upon a design theory and the difficulty we consider is the use of the institution by the designer. The technical bridge between institutional robustness and statistical robu...
